What is Meditation and Mindfulness?

Meditation is about developing a state of awareness so that you can stay in the moment. This is important for your health and wellbeing.

stones piled on top of each other at a beachIf you are constantly thinking (or worrying) about the past or thinking (or worrying) about the future, then you are not in the moment but just living in a negative state of past /future thoughts.

Most people only consider 2 levels of awareness, being asleep or awake. Meditation teaches you the "in-between" state; not awake but not asleep. This is known as the alpha state which is a very nourishing state for your health and wellbeing. It's just as important as having a good night's sleep.

By practising meditation, you will find that you start to come into balance, physically, emotionally and mentally. Meditation is used by many to pursue a holistic or spiritual way of life, but the reality is that it is one of the most practical tools you can use to help you reduce stress.

Styles of Meditation

Mindfulness/Mindful Awareness

There are different approaches to learning meditation. Mindfulness is one approach you can use. This is where you learn to focus.

You might use your breath as your focus, just noticing the 'in' and the 'out' breath. Most people never pay attention to their breath but it is a useful tool for meditation. Even if you start to pay it attention as you read these words (do it now... take your attention to the tip of your nose and just notice your breath). What you'll find is that for those few seconds you do this, you will not be thinking or worrying about the past /future. In other words you'll be in the moment.

Relaxation - Progressive Muscle Relaxation

Learning to relax is an important first step for many people. We teach PMR (progressive muscle relaxation) which is a method that helps you to release stress and tension in your body. You practise this in our beginner's course to help you learn how to relax and reduce physical pain within your body. This is an excellent technique to learn if you have problems with sleep (insomnia or broken sleep).

It is also an important step for you to take as a beginner before trying some of the meditation techniques, otherwise you may find it difficult to meditate.

Guided Meditation and Visualisation

We teach this in the:

book now buttonOur tutors guide you on a journey, engaging your mind using imagery or sensations/feelings to help you find a peaceful place to relax.

Your mind is a powerful tool and although we are showing you how to use it (via your imagination), your body responds as if you are actually in this peaceful place your mind has created. This helps you to let go of worries and develop a sense of inner peace.

All our courses help you to practise these techniques to improve your health and wellbeing. However in the meditation classes, we do suggest and show you how to incorporate these techniques outside of your meditation class and into your life in a practical and easy way.
